Five TED Talks that Inspire us to Tackle Poverty

TED Global 2014 is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this week, where over 50 speakers will take the stage and explore ideas that shape our world. While there are countless TED talks that inspire us, including those from our fearless leader, below are five TED Talks that have informed how we think about tackling poverty, and continue to inspire us.

Sendhil Mullainathan, Behavior Economist

“We put billions of dollars into fuel-efficient technologies. How much are we putting into energy behavior change in a credible, systematic, testing way?”

Julian Treasure, Sound Consultant

“We’re becoming impatient. We don’t want oratory anymore, we want sound bites. And the art of conversation is being replaced — dangerously, I think — by personal broadcasting. I don’t know how much listening there is in this conversation, which is sadly very common.”

Bryan Stevenson, Public Interest Lawyer

“Our system isn’t just being shaped in these ways that seem to be distorting around race, they’re also distorted by poverty. We have a system of justice in this country that treats you much better if you’re rich and guilty than if you’re poor and innocent.“

Hans Rosling, Global health expert; data visionary

“And remember, please remember my main message, which is this: the seemingly impossible is possible. We can have a good world. I showed you the shots, I proved it in the PowerPoint, and I think I will convince you also by culture.“

 Dan Pallotta, Charity Defender

“The real social innovation I want to talk about involves charity. I want to talk about how the things we’ve been taught to think about giving and about charity and about the nonprofit sector are actually undermining the causes we love and our profound yearning to change the world.“
