COCA-COLA INVESTS IN WATERHEALTH INTERNATIONAL’S MODEL

The Coca-Cola Company and Acumen investee WaterHealth International (WHI) recently announced their plan to bring safe drinking water to 1 million school children through their Child With Water (CWW) program. Together, the partners aim to deliver 500 million liters of safe drinking water a year to 1 million school children in 2,000 schools in developing countries by the end of 2015. Safe drinking water will be delivered to school children through water purification systems installed, operated and maintained by WaterHealth International and the first installations will begin in May 2014. Acumen is proud to announce the selection of our third cohort of East Africa Fellows. After a competitive selection process, we’ve chosen are a diverse group of 20 inspiring individuals who are fighting poverty and changing lives of people all over East Africa. Each Fellow is driving an innovative social change initiative addressing a variety of development issues, such as using mobile technology to support smallholder farmers, increasing access to financial services for Muslim women in Kenya, empowering urban refugees in Tanzania, and working with the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs of South Sudan. Acumen Pakistan Signs MoU with Punjab Board of Investment & Trade

Lahore, Pakistan, 13 February, 2014: Acumen Pakistan and the Punjab Board of Investment & Trade (PBIT) signed a $3.5 million Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Public-Private Partnership basis to alleviate poverty by providing critical goods and services to those at the bottom-of-the-pyramid. Acumen, a pioneering social impact investor, has identified sustainable solutions in the solar energy and water sectors, which is expected to generate employment opportunities as well. EduBridge Wins Emerging India Award

We’re delighted to announce that EduBridge has been awarded the ICICI Foundation-CNBC TV18 Emerging India Award under the Urban Livelihoods category! The annual Emerging India awards recognize and honor small medium enterprises that are doing exceptional work in creating value and impact across different business sectors. Founded in 2009, EduBridge provides skill development training for youth from rural and semi-urban areas and job placement in entry-level formal sector jobs in nearby cities. Training consists of spoken English, computer literacy, as well as sector-specific skills and employment-readiness coaching on how to perform and succeed in the workplace. The company targets youth aged between 18 and 25 years who typically go on to become the first formally employed members of their families. EduBridge is addressing both the critical shortage of skilled talent in urban areas and the staggering rates of unemployment in semi-urban and rural areas.   EduBridge currently runs ten centers across four states and has worked with more than 7,000 youth. The company has also partnered with over 75 companies across sectors such as IT, banking, insurance and retail, and has placed some of its trainees at top corporate firms including Unilever, P&G, Future Group and Axis Bank. This award marks EduBridge’s commitment to educating and securing formal employment for low-income youth across India, and we congratulate the entire team on the well-deserved win. Husk Power Systems featured on PBS NewsHour

When the world’s largest democracy goes dark, it makes headlines. During the 2012 India blackouts, roughly 600 million people were left without power, making it the largest power outage in world history.  Not included among those without electricity were the more than 200,000 customers of Husk Power Systems (HPS) in the state of Bihar.  The biogas-powered mini-grids created and run by Husk Power continued to provide electricity and light for villages that the India government has declared “impossible to reach by conventional means.” [Read More]
