Acumen opened its India office in 2006 and is now our second largest office after New York.  The India Office operates across functions including portfolio, business development, legal, and finance and has cultivated a strong local advisory board and maintains relationships with local financial services, consulting firms, academic institutions, industry associations, and government.     Abhay is a Portfolio Manager based in India with primary responsibility for the Energy and Water Portfolios. Prior to Acumen, Abhay worked with Axis Private Equity which manages a USD 150 M fund focused on the infrastructure sector. At Axis PE, Abhay was leading the fund’s investment in Shalivahana, which is the largest biomass power producer in India and where he also acted as an observer on the Board. Additionally, he worked extensively on other areas of the social infrastructure sector including education, healthcare and logistics. His earlier experience includes working as a dealer in foreign exchange and derivatives for corporate clients at ICICI Bank treasury, and as a tax consultant with Arthur Andersen.

    Abhay holds an MSc in Finance from London Business School. He is also a qualified Chartered Accountant and Company Secretary.

    Ankur leads overall sector strategy for our investments and has direct responsibility for the Education portfolio. Prior to this, Ankur has played multiple roles at Acumen, including Interim India Director and global Business Development Manager. Before he joined Acumen, Ankur worked for several years with leading private investors focused on financial access, energy and clean water for low-income markets in India. He also helped set up WaterHealth India, which now serves ~600 villages with drinking water; and managed a project for Robin Hood Foundation to build libraries in 25+ New York City public schools, now serving ~20,000 students. Ankur started his career with McKinsey & Company advising Fortune 100 companies in the US and Europe on M&A and growth opportunities.

    Ankur has an Architecture degree from Cornell University, and a Masters in International Development from Harvard’s Kennedy School, where he was a Reynolds and a Soros Fellow. Ankur is also an Advisory Board member for the Centre for Civil Society, an independent non-profit research and education organization in Delhi.

In 2011, Bavidra was selected as an Acumen Global Fellow where he was placed with d.light design in Shenzhen and New Delhi, working on brand development, product launches and new product innovation.  Upon completion of the Global Fellowship Bavidra Co-Founded a technology start-up in San Francisco that built mobile products for sustainable urban mobility. He holds a BA(h) in Sociology for Queen’s University and an MA from Kingston University.

    Jhoomer joined Acumen in April 2014 as a Senior Portfolio Associate. She is focussed on developing Acumen’s Health and Housing portfolios in India.

    Before joining Acumen, Jhoomer worked as a strategy consultant at Accenture Management Consulting, where she advised clients across public systems, health and development sector. Her work also involved financial value analysis to identify execution challenges and potential opportunities such as value chain improvement, cost restructuring, M&A and market expansion opportunities for global clients across various sectors.
    Prior to Accenture, she worked briefly in an Indian I-Bank in the role of an M&A analyst.

    Jhoomer has completed her B.Tech in Electronics Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Surat and has an MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

    Payal leads Acumen’s India business development efforts to build a community of local supporters. She began her career with McKinsey & Co at their Knowledge Centre in India where she managed their Media & Entertainment sector research. Subsequently, she caught the early stage investing itch and spent five years at Sequoia Capital in India – starting with roles ranging from research and business development, she ultimately became a part of their investment team. She then moved on to pursue an entrepreneurial track to create an online referral focused recruitment firm – here she contributed to building out various new financial services verticals from scratch.

    Payal has also helped support Friends Welfare Organisation, since their inception. FWO is a not-for-profit which provides free plastic surgery services for the underprivileged in India, in association with Interplast Germany. She has received a degree in business administration from Symbiosis University in Pune.

    Saima joined the Acumen, Pakistan office in April 2009 as Business Manager where she was mainly focused on developing and managing Acumen’s Health and Education Portfolio. In her current role as Fellows Manager, Saima is responsible for recruitment, training and coaching of Fellows with an aim towards building the next generation of social change leaders for Pakistan. Prior to joining Acumen, Saima worked as CEO and Managing Partner of The Review Private Limited, a company formed to acquire and run a test prep franchise, The Princeton Review. Before making this entrepreneurial shift, Saima worked for six years in the financial sector; her last assignment was at Global Securities, a brokerage firm, where she worked as Senior Associate, Corporate Finance.     Ajit joins Acumen from Ernst & Young, where he has served as Advisory Partner & Leader (Life Sciences) for the past six years. At EY, he was a strategic advisor to the leadership of some of the leading Indian and global life science and healthcare players with the focus being business transformation and growth. Prior to his time at E&Y, Ajit was President of Piramal Healthcare, one of the leading pharmaceuticals companies in India, where he built the international business from inception in 2002 to $300M by the end of 2008. Ajit held multiple leadership roles across strategy, M&A and business leadership. During his tenure at Accenture’s Strategic Services practice in UK and India, he led the development of one of the firm’s largest and most successful internal projects – the Offshore Development Centre in 2001, which has now grown to about 100,000 people across multiple cities in India. Ajit has worked in an advisory capacity to Acumen in the past, most recently participating in Regional Fellows selection panels in Mumbai.

    Ajit holds an undergraduate degree in Computer Sciences from PSG College of Technology, India and a Masters of Business Administration from Carnegie Mellon University (Tepper School of Business).

    Prior to joining Acumen, Avinash was working with TAO Education, a New Delhi based education technology start-up which he co-founded. As the head of business strategy and alliances, he spearheaded the financial planning and projections, market entry strategies and managed relationships with various stakeholders including potential investors, advisors and clients.

    Earlier, Avinash was working with Citibank Corporate and Investment Banking team as a relationship manager for top MNC clients. He worked closely with Citi and client global teams on cross border transactions (FDI and M&A deals) as well as end to end servicing and advisory across the entire gamut of banking products.

    Avinash holds a MBA from FMS, University of Delhi and a BE (Electronics and Communications) from NSIT, University of Delhi.

    Siddharth Tata joined Acumen in September 2010 to further develop the Agriculture Portfolio in India. In his last role at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Siddharth worked with non-profit organizations to help build programs in the areas of dairy development, watershed management, and creating market linkages to improve incomes of farmers in India. Previously, as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company’s Mumbai office, he advised clients in the retail, IT, and financial services industries. He has also assisted a Mumbai-based investment firm on its agriculture investment strategy and helped launch a turnaround program for coffee washing stations in Rwanda as a volunteer consultant with TechnoServe. Siddharth has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, where he was awarded the Shankar Dayal Sharma prize for excellence.

    In her role on the impact team, Wei Wei is responsible for building systems to assess and maximize social impact at Acumen’s portfolio companies, with the goal of improving our collective understanding of how and where patient capital can be the biggest lever for poverty alleviation. She has a focus on our India portfolio, where she is based.

    Prior to this role she worked closely with Acumen’s CEO for 4 years on thought leadership for Acumen and was seconded in Nairobi to Orb Energy, a solar energy company and Acumen investee, to jump start the company’s East Africa operations via new sales channels. She started at Acumen on the Talent team as an Oliver Wyman Non Profit Fellow and holds a BA, summa cum laude, from Columbia University in Economics and East Asian Studies.

    When James was a young boy and had been orphaned by HIV/AIDS, he heard about a government scholarship to attend school. Believing in the power of education, James was determined to seize this opportunity – no matter what it took. He sold a goat to buy a pair of shoes and made the trek from his village to Kampala to make an unannounced visit to the Ugandan President. Eventually, the First Lady agreed to meet with him and ultimately James received the scholarship he sought.

    James’ persistence and audacity set him on a transformative course to becoming an international development practitioner and working on behalf of his own family and community to find solutions to poverty. After studying financial and managerial accounting and development economics in the U.S., James helped design Uganda’s largest youth scholarship program with BRAC and the MasterCard Foundation. He advanced youth development programs in the country, most recently managing Educate’s youth-based social entrepreneurship program in Uganda, serving more than 250 schools.

    James will spend his Fellowship with education investee Labournet in Bangalore, India.

    Keeran is committed to addressing the root causes of poverty through education and healthcare interventions. In 2010, he left a promising career in management consulting at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to co-found and lead Teach for Malaysia, an organization now serving thousands of children in the country.

    Keeran is a seasoned entrepreneur and understands the challenges of starting, growing, and scaling a social organization. He comes to the Global Fellows program having recently completed a graduate degree in international education and public policy at Harvard University, where he was a Wendy & Philip Kistler Scholar.

    Keeran will spend his Fellowship with healthcare investee Ziqitza Healthcare Limited in Mumbai, India.

    As a community organizer, entrepreneur, and a former Acumen Summer Associate in Pakistan, Stephanie brings a diverse set of management and policy experiences to the Acumen Global Fellows program.

    Stephanie’s work has been guided by two principles: a belief in social progress and the fundamental need to change politics to increase public welfare. She managed field operations in seven states for President Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2007-2008 and served as Director for Yemen Policy at the White House during the Arab Spring. She has worked to expand low-income energy access through consultancies in India and co-founded a solar energy startup in the U.S.

    Hailing from Hawaii, she holds Bachelor’s in History & International Studies from Yale University and a Master’s in Public Affairs, with a concentration in international development, from Princeton University.

    Stephanie will spend her Fellowship with energy investee d.light design in Gurgaon, India.

    While working as a productivity engineer at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), Bailey was inspired to create efficiency through different means. “How can burnt-out and unhealthy employees be productive in an unsupportive working environment?” At age 24, this question paved the way for Bailey to leave behind a lucrative career and pursue her vision. Today, she is the founder of Proactive Movement, a company enhancing employee and organizational wellness.

    Bailey’s success comes from her desire to challenge status quo, her vision when taking risks, and creativity when working with limited resources. Her industrial engineering skills honed during her years at GlaxoSmithKline and CIBC have also been critical to her ability to make positive impact.

    Bailey was born in Iran and immigrated to Canada when she was13, a move that enhanced her sense of purpose, gratitude, and drive to live a life of exploration and impact.

    Bailey will spend her Fellowship with healthcare investee Asian Health Alliance in Hubli, India.
