The Challenge

In Kenya, 3 million people lack access to reliable energy and clean drinking water. As a result, 75% of rural African families spend up to 50% of their disposable income on kerosene and 80% of illnesses in Kenya are related to problems with unsafe water, sanitation or hygiene.

The Innovation

RVE.SOL constructs off-grid electricity generators—powered almost entirely by renewable energy such as solar, biomass and hydropower—in rural Kenyan communities. RVE.SOL also uses energy from its KUDURA mini-grids to create and sell purified drinking water in the rural communities where it operates.

The Impact

RVE.SOL has served over 2,100 customers across Kenya—71% of whom live on less than $3.10 per day. The company has reduced its customers’ energy costs by 75%.
