India Fellows are Driving Real Change in their Own Communities.

Each year, the India Fellows Program brings together 20 emerging leaders from different regions, sectors, and socio-economic backgrounds in India.

About the India Fellows Program

Our Regional Fellows Program is a one-year leadership development program designed to build the next generation of social leaders with the audacity to transform society and create a better, more inclusive world.

The program equips 20 extraordinary individuals from across India with the knowledge, support system and practical wisdom to unlock their full potential and drive positive change in society. Over the course of a year, Fellows remain in their jobs while taking part in five week-long seminars, where they receive the tools, training and space to innovate new ideas, accelerate their impact, build a strong network of social leaders from across their region and around the world.

Unity in Diversity

Our Fellows are individuals who dare to do what’s right, not what’s easy, to create positive change in their country. Fellows can come from diverse cultural, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds and work in any sector, and they must be committed to ending poverty in their community through their work. They are the individuals who are making a long-term play of systems-level changing impact and are seeking the leadership and moral imagination skills to make it happen.

The Fellows we seek are:

  • Founders, Entrepreneurs, Intrapreneurs, Policy Makers, Movement Builders Innovators
  • Men and women of all ages and education levels who are able to participate in a program conducted in English.
  • Indians who have a demonstrated history of impact, commitment and concrete connection to the region.
  • Leaders with strong personal integrity, unrelenting perseverance and moral imagination.
  • Committed individuals ready to undergo an intensive year-long personal transformation and leadership journey followed by an induction into the larger Fellows Community.

Regional Fellows Training

Through our five in-person seminars and virtual content in-between seminars, twenty Fellows build and test new leadership skills within their cohort. This cohort-based learning model creates deep bonds of trust and fellowship, relationships that persist long beyond the first year and that Fellows utilize to create greater impact. Fellows equipped with the knowledge, support systems and skills to challenge the status quo, work across lines of difference and mobilize their communities. These fully-sponsored, one-year programs are designed to improve participants’ capacity to innovate and drive change while allowing them to remain in their full-time jobs.

Good Society

The Good Society Readings explore the meaning of a just society and the moral and historical foundation of social change through a series of curated readings of great thinkers such as Plato, Amartya Sen and Nelson Mandela. Fellows reflect on core human values, seek common ground and cultivate a richer understanding of their social change work in a broader historical context.

Adaptive Leadership

Based off the work of Harvard Professor Ron Heifitz, Adaptive Leadership is a practical leadership framework that helps individuals and organizations adapt and thrive in challenging environments. The content supports Fellows’ ability, both individually and collectively, to catalyze and embrace the gradual and meaningful process of change.

Systems Thinking

Fellows explore the concept of Systems Thinking through frameworks and on the ground application by working collaboratively on live challenges.Fellows are provided with frameworks to better understand larger, systemic problems and design more effective interventions.

Authentic Voice

Building off the work of Marshall Ganz, Fellows develop their capacity to articulate their story of self, us and now. Fellows are equipped to articulate a hopeful vision, speak across lines of difference, and move others to action.

Measuring Impact

Based on Acumen’s field-leading work in impact measurement, Lean Data, the Fellows deep dive into their own social change initiatives. Fellows map out their Theory of Change and identify action gaps which may hinder them achieving their organization’s desired outcomes and impact. The module provides tangible tools and different perspectives on how to  approach and measure the social impact of their work.

The Selection Process

The selection process for this program is very rigorous and highly competitive. Here is a general timeline of the process:

    Gopal is the co-founder of Youth4Jobs Foundation, a non-profit organization providing skills training and job placement to young people with disabilities across India. Since its founding in 2012, Youth4Jobs has grown to 20 training centers across ten states, provided skill training to more than 7,800 young people with disabilities and conducted more than 200 disability inclusion and sensitization workshops for corporate partners. From 2004-2010, Gopal worked with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to train 250,000 unemployed youth from rural and tribal areas. He holds a Master’s in Management from Osmania University in Hyderabad.

    Lezo is the Chief Strategist at YouthNet, a non-profit organization working with youth to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem and promote jobs in Nagaland.  He leads the “Impact 5000 by 18 Campaign,” a partnership with the Government of Nagaland to enhance the business skills and employability of 5,000 young people by 2018. He also manages Nagaland Job Center (NJC) which has helped over 700 youth secure jobs in the private sector in the last three years. He holds an MBA from London South Bank University and studied strategy at Harvard Business School.

Manmohan heads the Government Partnership and District Transformation Program which aims to improve learning levels of one million underprivileged children in the next three to five years. Manmohan is an Aspire Circle Fellow and holds a postgraduate diploma in Conflict Analysis and Peace-Building from Jamia Millia Islamia.

    Padam Jain is Program Officer, Sustainable Agriculture at SWISSAID Pune. He is also the Co-Founder of Prem Samriddhi Foundation which promotes indigenous seed programs and ecological farming in small and marginal farmer communities in Rajasthan. Previously, Padam was Program Leader at Self-Reliant Initiatives through Joint Action (SRIJAN), a grassroots organization committed to promoting sustainable models of rural development in India through interventions in agriculture and natural resource management. He holds a Master’s in Irrigation Water Management from Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur and studied Markets and Livelihoods at St. Francis Xavier University in Canada.

    Shruthi is a consultant at Bluteter Professional Services which provides social enterprises with the operational and financial expertise they need to scale. Prior to this role, she led the teacher training vertical at Hippocampus Learning Centres where she equipped more than 500 rural women with the skills to deliver quality early childhood educational experiences in classrooms and learning centers across Karnataka. Shruthi began her career at Infosys Technologies before becoming a Teach for India Fellow in 2012. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from Visvesvaraya Technological University.

She holds a Master’s in Environment Management from the Indian Institute of Forest Management.

Dilip previously worked with The Akshaya Patra Foundation, HelpAge India and Pollinate Energy.  He holds a Master’s in International Social Welfare and Social Policy from Anglia Ruskin University.

He is part of the core team that developed GauGas, an affordable and reliable biogas and biofertlizer system for dairy farmers. Koushik was a 2013 Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Villgro. He holds a Master’s of Technology in Renewable Energy Engineering from TERI University.

    Malathy is the State Coordinator for the SPARSH Centre for Participatory Learning leading the “Deepshikha: Building Young Futures” program supported by UNICEF and Barclays Bank. Deepshikha is building strong and sustainable networks of empowered women in India through a self-help group model. To date, they have enabled 89,000 adolescent girls and 35,000 young women access to life skills education, financial literacy and entrepreneurship development. She holds a Master’s in Habitat Policy and Practice from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and a postgraduate degree in Business Management from the Bharathidasan Institute of Management.

He is a former Villgro Fellow and holds a Master’s degree in Design from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

    Parabal is a Program Associate at EkStep, a not-for-profit initiative that is creating digital infrastructure and tools to increase access to learning opportunities by facilitating interactions between content creators, learning facilitators, organisations and the learner across contexts and types of content. Parabal is also a founding member of Edumust, a non-profit organization focused on providing quality education to rural children in government primary schools across Punjab. Parabal is a Dalai Lama Fellow and holds a dual-degree in Economics and International Relations from Stanford University.
