Electric vehicles are booming in Indian cities, but rural and low-income communities remain stuck with expensive, fuel-based transport. For millions of workers, caregivers, and small business owners, the cost of mobility is a barrier to opportunity; and, most EV startups are building for the affluent, not the underserved.

The innovation

eBik is flipping the script with electric bikes and retrofit kits designed for the realities of rural life. The company’s flagship product—the Roadster e-bike—is purpose-built for affordability, durability, and high utility. eBik also offers kits to electrify manual carts, making the transition to clean mobility more accessible. Its core design is protected by a government patent, and its prices are up to 50% lower than alternatives.

The impact

With backing from Acumen’s Pioneer Energy Investment Initiative (PEII+), eBik is scaling its operations and expanding its dealer and service networks across Tier 2 cities and rural India. The company is enabling last-mile users—from farmers to delivery workers—to access clean, low-cost transportation that reduces emissions, powers livelihoods, and advances inclusive climate adaptation.
