The challenge
Liberia has one of the lowest electricity access rates in the world. With limited infrastructure and rural communities largely off-grid, most families lack reliable, affordable power. Small energy distributors face steep barriers — building supply chains, earning community trust, and securing the capital to grow in a fragile, underdeveloped market.
The innovation
EcoPower Liberia is bridging the energy gap with decentralized solar solutions and essential energy products like lanterns, home systems, and power banks. Combining project development with last-mile distribution, this local enterprise is proving what’s possible in one of West Africa’s toughest markets — and paving the way for others to follow.
The impact
In 2024, EcoPower Liberia received inventory financing through Acumen’s Hardest-to-Reach initiative, facilitated via Charm Impact’s lending platform. The investment supported smaller distributors and reduced transaction costs through financial intermediaries — advancing H2R’s goal of testing new financing models to strengthen early-stage energy ventures in high-risk, high-potential regions.
