The challenge
In Ghana, poor soil quality and lack of access to affordable farming inputs lead to low yields, trapping farmers in a vicious cycle of poverty. Smallholders resort to using costly, imported chemical fertilizers that not only fail to produce high yields but also depreciate the quality of the soil. In the Ashanti, Eastern, Brong Ahafo, and Northern regions, 75% of farmers fall below the $4 per day poverty line.
The innovation
Farmers Hope developed an organic fertilizer using locally available ingredients, such as poultry droppings and neem seeds, which provide crops with much needed nutrients and nourishes the soil. The fertilizer produces 60% higher yields than regular chemical fertilizers and is priced at 50% less than competing products.
The impact
Farmers Hope has assisted 4,000 farmers in the Ashanti, Eastern, Brong Ahafo, and Northern regions, with plans to reach 25,200 in the next five years and the potential to reach more than 400,000 smallholder farmers in the long term.
