The Challenge
Northern Uganda hosts nearly one million refugees and displaced people, many of whom rely on small-scale farming for survival. These farmers often operate on extremely limited land and face systemic barriers, including lack of access to quality inputs, inadequate training for constrained conditions, and unreliable market access. As a result, they earn significantly less than host communities and remain excluded from viable agricultural value chains.
The Innovation
Omia is an agribusiness that delivers an integrated solution tailored to underserved and displaced farming communities. Approximately 60% of farmers served by Omia live below the $2.15 per day poverty line. The company provides affordable crop and livestock inputs, practical training designed for small plots and limited resources, and a reliable buy-back channel that ensures farmers can sell their produce at fair prices. By combining input distribution with market access, Omia reduces risk, builds trust, and enables farmers to invest confidently in productivity-enhancing practices—creating a differentiated and scalable model in hard-to-reach markets.
The Impact
Omia serves more than 100,000 smallholder farmers across Northern Uganda, including nearly 10,000 displaced farmers. Its model has driven strong livelihood improvements: 92% of farmers report increased production, 89% report higher earnings, and 91% report improved quality of life. By enabling higher yields, better market participation, and greater resilience to climate shocks, Omia is transforming smallholder agriculture into a pathway toward economic inclusion and stability in one of the region’s most fragile contexts.
