The challenge
Most farmers in rural Madhya Pradesh, a state in central India, earn less than $2.50 per day and rely on cattle-herding to supplement their incomes. Additionally, many smallholder farmers often have limited bargaining power and lose profits to middlemen.
The innovation
The company utilizes technology at every step of their operations to increase the quality of their product and make the entire process more transparent for participating farmers, which breeds loyalty along the supply chain. Training, basic veterinary care, high-quality inputs and services improve both output and quality of milk, and farmers become loyal to Sahayog due to the positive impact.
The impact
Over 64% of SAHAYOG’s farmers live below the local poverty line. Partnering with Sahayog has increased their daily incomes by an average of 20%.
