The challenge
The average Hispanic household has one-fifth the wealth of the average white household in America. Inequality and the wealth gap continue to persist in this country and it is a pressing issue for the Latino community, which constitute 19% of the population but account for 28% of Americans living in poverty.
The innovation
SUMA is a financial education, content, and wealth-building platform that wants to help the 30 million Millennial and Gen Z Latinos across America close the racial wealth gap—in one generation. SUMA co-founders Beatriz Acevedo, Mary Hernandez, and Xavier Gutierrez believe that offering culturally-specific financial content, education, and products to the Latino community will help them gain control of their finances and build, manage, and sustain wealth. Suma offers:
- Financial education and content tailored to the experiences, language, and culture of the Latino community—from saving for college to investing and retirement.
- Gamified money challenges and tools that make personal finance engaging and accessible.
- Partnerships with employers, schools, realtors, and nonprofits to scale its reach and integrate financial wellness into everyday environments.
With over 1.9 million users, SUMA is creating a movement for financial inclusion and generational wealth grounded in culture, trust, and empowerment.
